Rangitoto College Courtyards

Rangitoto College Courtyards

We were approached by S3 project Management to provide documentation and contract management for 2 new landscape courtyards at Rangitoto College.

College wished to develop a large and underused courtyard area into a memorable place featuring water and greenery, for quiet reflection and conversation, in complete contrast to the typically robust school landscape. The design references Rangitoto Island’s volcanic geology, and is also informed by what we perceive to be a real strength of the College: that within a structured school environment the individuality of the students is celebrated. Hence the water feature and planting are held within a strong geometric grid interrupted by large interestingly shaped boulders that form a river through the landscape connecting the different social spaces.

The courtyards were constructed to a very high standard and are not only extensively used but still retain the qualities that were intended in the 2 original designs.

The tranquil courtyard was the recipient of New Zealand institute of Landscape Architects award
